"I used up 90 percent of my infrequent downtime to make it... they said I went off the registry so they’re still expecting something from me."

Few occasions bring out the worst in people like weddings and baby showers. This is a lesson that one uncle-to-be has recently learnt after his attempts at a personal handmade gift ended in a family dispute.

"Due to financial challenges, I am currently broke," the man wrote in his post to Reddit, adding, "This coincided with my sister-in-law’s baby shower."

He went on to say that he had set some money aside, but due to unexpected car expenses, he didn't have much money to spend. To add to this obstacle, by the time he got to the registry, only the big-ticket items were left.

"I can knit pretty well and have a yarn stash so in my downtime between work, and general life I knitted up a (navy blue) baby blanket for my new niece," he continued.

"I did pick up some smaller items too, pacifiers, some of those little texture books and whatnot.

'My sister-in-law was peeved and gave me back the blanket for being the ‘wrong color’. I was annoyed but one of my friends had a baby recently so I decided I’d give it to her. I left the smaller items and went home a little miffed."

A few days later, the man's brother called enquiring as to where their gift was.

"My brother calls and says my sister-in-law is asking what I’m planning to get them so they can start planning the nursery layout," he said.

"I was just sorta like WTF and pointed out that I had already given them my gift and his wife gave it back.

"I asked about the smaller items I gave them and my brother said his wife said those didn’t count, they asked for gifts off the registry, or I could make a blanket with the right colors."

Obviously, he refused, but the rest of the family says he's in the wrong. The registry now only has super expensive items which he cannot afford, yet his mum says it's his own fault for "going off the registry" and his dad... well just wait for it.

"Dad’s stance is ‘why are you as a grown-ass man knitting?’" he said, which is a whole other problem in itself.

Thankfully, people on Reddit were in support of the man who's great with his hands.

"If your parents are so upset, they can get something on your behalf. Bam, problem solved," commented one person. "Let’s see how they like paying for $100 items. A baby blanket is cute, their loss."

Another added, "So this is the next phase of bridezilla - entitled mom."

"Not to be crass, but a man that knits is awesome," added another. "Finger dexterity is never a bad thing, plus all the cool stuff that could be made!"

And several suggested this is their last chance to ever receive anything handmade again.

"NEVER give them anything homemade again," said one person.

"That was my grandmother's policy, and I am proud to say my mother and I carry it on as well.

"You offered an awesome homemade gift, and it got rejected. They get low-thought gifts from now on. Amazon Gift cards that can be ordered from your phone the day of. Generic images on the E-gift cards."
