Trains are A’comin’ In: If your son or daughter loves trains, this weekend will be over-the-moon time for them with the 18th Annual Model Train Show at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library.

October 8 & 9 will see the return of the Oregon Electric O Gaugers Train Club giant three track layout. This Albany-based group wants to get your kids into a hobby that will provide a lifetime of fun and community. To start out, they don’t need a track of their own or a background in the rails, they just need to be intrigued by how these perfectly miniaturized trains perform.

Check it out Saturday from 1:00-5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the library, located at 645 NW Monroe Ave.

Halloween Has Begun: It’s October, so all things Halloween-y are happening.

On October 26 – a day off from regular school – you can sign your K-5 students in classes of “Chem in a Flash” and “Science of Magic” offered by Parents for Education Plus. The classes start at noon with check in, followed by two one-hour classes and then an assembly, taking place at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, located at 4515 SW West Hills. Fed is Best: Should a new mother be harassed for not breastfeeding her baby?

Many Baby Boomers and Gen-Xers were bottle fed as the act of breastfeeding was considered something done by the uneducated and low in class. By the 1980’s, mothers who didn’t breastfeed were condemned for using a bottle – even if the liquid in said bottle came out of the mother.

Recently, the formula crisis was upon us. Most of the world came to see that baby formula was not just for babies; many young children and even some teens and adults rely on formula to get enough nutrition into their systems to stay alive.

So, new mothers out there who are struggling to keep going amidst the push by others to tell you what’s best for your child, relax. Because breastfeeding is great, and formula feeding is great, and solid food feeding if your child is ready for it is also great. What matters is to listen to your gut and your pediatrician, and to disregard what is rudely said by people who are wholly uninvolved in the decision-making process. Basically, do what you need to do to keep your child alive.
