A video of a dog with a peculiar preference for how its meal is served has gone viral on TikTok, where it has received over a million views.

The clip, shared by the TikTok account @weishaarfam, shows a person putting a scoop of kibble in a bowl before topping it with some miniature bone-shaped biscuits, placed carefully into a heart shape.

A message overlaid on the video read: "Sent this to our pet sitter to show him how to feed our babies while we are gone."

The person then sprinkles spoonfuls of a powder from a container labeled "love dust" over the food before the video pans to a dog waiting with its tail wagging. In a later comment, the user revealed that "love dust" is actually plaque banish, a substance used to promote dental hygiene in pets.

The dog in the latest clip appears to be quite particular about its food but do canines really care about how their food is served?

While not every dog might be picky about food presentation, having a routine around feeding is beneficial.

In an article for VCA, one of North America's largest animal hospital chains operating over 1,000 animal hospitals, veterinarians Dr. Ryan Llera and Dr. Robin Downing explained: "Dogs are creatures of habit. We can use this fact to our advantage by creating a regular feeding schedule and sticking to it.

Feeding dogs at regular times "provides the security and predictability of a routine," making meals "a cornerstone event of the day around which other activities are added," the veterinarians said.

A feeding routine can help your dog cope when there are changes in the household, such as a child going away to college, the arrival of a new baby or when the family are on vacation and a house-sitter is in charge, they said.

Some eating habits may be tied to your dog's genetics and some breeds are known to have healthier appetites than others. But much of it is down to the environment, according to Dr. Jerry Klein, the chief veterinary officer of the American Kennel Club, the world's largest purebred dog registry.
