A parent in Delhi talked about his pain when he found plastic in a can of baby food.

Cathal Gallagher noticed a small amount of plastic in the baby food while feeding his 9-month-old son.

He said: "We were a bit in a hurry, so we took a jar and we poured it on the plate to feed my son. When we reached the end of the jar, I could see these small pieces sticking to the plate. When I touched them, I realized that it is plastic.

"It's like the film on microwave food, a very fragile transparent plastic. We finally found five pieces, but of course at this stage, about 90% of the cans have been eaten. We immediately began to worry.

"We called our health visitor and he told us that as long as our child is not unwell, we should not worry, but if he does develop symptoms, take him to the emergency room.

"We tried to contact this company and it was very difficult. I submitted the contact form on their website. I sent them a private message on their Facebook page. On their Facebook page, there is a section with a lot of similar Post events and parents showed their disgust.

"The company did contact me. They said they would send someone to collect the cans and plastics and contact me after the investigation. They didn't ask how the baby was."

For Cathal, this stressful situation made him wonder how much effort the company has to put in to make baby food.

He added: "This is very worrying and it makes me have a lot of questions about the quality control of these products. It is bad enough in ordinary food, but I think baby products are worse.

"We received an envelope and sent it to them for their investigation.

"We were also told to contact the environmental health departments in Delhi and the Strabane District Council. We called them, and I have called them every day since then, but without success. They did not call me back.

"Since then, my child has not felt any discomfort, but at least a dozen pieces of plastic have passed. The whole process is very worrying and painful."

The company involved has been contacted for comments, but has not yet responded.

The City of Delhi and the Strabane District Council confirmed that the Environmental Sanitation Service has received the complaint, has contacted the complainant within the allotted time frame, and is investigating the matter.
