Uninsured and underinsured moms who give birth at Guam Memorial Hospital will get a little help with their newborn’s needs with a Baby Essentials Gift Kit created by the “Pink Ladies” of the GMH Volunteers Association. The volunteer organization applied for and received a $25,000 grant from the Guam Economic Development Authority to support their mission to help the island’s public hospital.

The Baby Essentials Gift Kit is filled with various items such as disposable and reusable diapers, grooming supplies, a thermometer and receiving blankets.

“The reason we wanted to do this is that we have a group of ladies that do patient care ... they provide little things for the patient,” said Toni Pecon, president of the GMH Volunteers Association. Pecon explained that prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteers contributed what they could using their personal funds and resources.

Pecon said the idea for the kits came from one of the association’s donors and that members of the volunteer association wrote and submitted the grant application that will help provide patients with the Baby Essentials Gift Kit for at least the next year.

GMH’s “Pink Ladies” have received a positive reception from the maternity ward’s grateful moms.

“The ladies tell me that the women are very happy to receive them,” Pecon said.
