A distraught mother said that she forgave her husband for killing their little twins after accidentally locking them in the car on a sultry day for eight hours.

In July 2019, when Juan forgot to send one-year-old Luna and Phoenix to the daycare center before going to work at a veterans hospital in the Bronx, New York, Marissa Rodríguez’s world was “shattered” "Again.

He only discovered this tragic mistake when he returned to the Honda car at the end of the long-distance shift and saw from the rearview mirror that the two were still tied behind.

Marissa recalled seeing a few missed calls before he finally connected, and told her frantically: "My love, my goodness, my love... I killed the baby."

The Iraqi veteran was saved from jail after pleading guilty to two reckless misdemeanor charges. The judge described this as a "tragic and unfortunate" case.

Marisa admitted that she "did not always support" her husband, she told 7news: "I am very angry with many people.

'When Juan was released from prison, they appointed me as his "guard" to ensure that he would not commit suicide.

"I admitted at the time that I didn't think I cared what he did. I was pushed in a different direction and I just wanted to leave.

But she said that over time, her "anger decreased" and her "understanding increased."

She said: "I know Juan will never intentionally hurt our children. My goal is to keep him away from prison.

In the two and a half years after the tragedy, Marisa said she asked Juan to try to allow herself and other children to live a "normal life."

But she added: "Nothing can bring back the true hope and happiness we once had.

"Now we have never simply experienced happiness without any harm, because they are not here to be part of it."
